Teen years can be very unpredictable. You still have the moodiness and uncertainty of the pre-teen years and also witness your child striving for independence as he or she grows older. As they grow, you hope you can have an influence to help your teenager make mature decisions. If the decisions are not necessarily wise in the beginning, hopefully you can teach them to learn from their mistakes.
However, you can play a significant role in shaping the decisions your teen makes.
The decisions to discuss with your teenager regarding choices of friends, dating, curfews, driving, smoking, drugs, and sexual activity are endless. One thing to keep in minds: THEY WILL TRY TO DEFY AUTHORITY. Don’t let them see your frustration or desperation. They want to feel in control of their own lives. One of the methods of attempting to do this, is by reducing dependence on their parents. However, you can play a significant role in shaping the decisions your teen makes.
How can you be authoritative without being authoritarian?
-

-
Stay involved and participate in their activities
-
Know who their friends are and have them over your house for meals and activities
-
Teach by example
Now is the time to reinforce character and build self-discipline. Participating in sports, music and academic challenges will need your support. Be there for them and your time will be well spent. |
